Immanuel First has a family of ministries and small
groups to
connect with and serve its congregation and the community, including
fellowships for men, women, children and seniors. We also have services
in Vietnamese on Sunday afternoons and in Chinese through Grace Chinese
Alliance Church, as well as hosting Victory Outreach of West Covina on our former day school campus.
This page was updated on April 23, 2011.
Founded in December 2000, Immanuel First Vietnamese Lutheran Church is
extending the Good News to the Vietnamese community in the San Gabriel
Valley with Sunday afternoon worship services, English as Second
Language classes, and fellowship opportunities throughout the year.
Pastor An Binh Thai leads services Sunday afternoons at 3:00 p.m. in
the sanctuary.
Immanuel First shares its facilities with Grace Chinese
Alliance Church, a congregation of the Christian and Missionary
Alliance which has been part of the West Covina
community for nearly 20 years. Pastor Ko-Tay Chan leads services in
English and Chinese Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary.
As of Easter 2011, Victory Outreach of West Covina now holds Sunday and midweek services in our former day school on the northeast end of the Immanuel First campus. Headed by senior pastor John Dias, this local fellowship of Victory Outreach International shares our vision of transforming lives through the love, grace and power of Jesus Christ in our local multi-ethnic community.
Every Thursday Pastor Okubo and other golf players in
the
congregation have fun and fellowship playing the links at local courses
in the San Gabriel Valley. All golfers are invited to join in.
The LWML at Immanuel First supports seminary students in
the Concordia University System and ministry work at our church through
various fundraising and service activities such as bake sales, ushering
at Sunday services, work projects and the year-round collection of
"mite boxes" - small coin boxes that are filled up with change,
collected and presented to the church several times a year. LWML also
serves as the women's fellowship at Immanuel, with luncheons,
fellowship with women from area LCMS churches, and other activities.
In the fall of 2007, Immanuel First established two Girl
Scout
troops: Daisy Troop 4144 for preschoolers and kindergarteners, and
Brownie Troop 418 for 1st and 2nd graders. Both troops are under the
leadership of Tiffany Claxton.
Lost and Found (LaF) is our all-new youth group which
meets Friday
afternoons on our church campus. The group consists of high school
students from freshmen to seniors and usually takes part in plans that
involve social skills and problem solving.
Of course, you're viewing it right now. This has been
our primary
website since December 2002 and has information on our history,
beliefs, worship schedule and church events, as well as downloadable
MP3 sermons and Bible studies.
Immanuel First has group pages on Facebook,
the world's largest social networking site, and on Twitter,
where we "tweet" our events and activities. You must have a
Facebook or Twitter account and join
our groups to leave comments on our pages.
GodTube is the leading Christian video hosting site on the
internet. Our channel on GodTube has our library of slideshows and
sermons, which
are viewed regularly. Only GodTube members can post
comments, but our page is available for viewing at www.godtube.com/immanuelfirst.
Blogs by Pastor Okubo and other
church members are hosted by Blogger and encourage feedback
from our readers.
Our Vietnamese fellowship's new youth worship band plays
contemporary praise songs that connect with the younger,
second-generation members of the congregation.
Under the direction of Sue Beckenham, the IFL
Choir
performs a variety
of traditional hymns and contemporary worship songs at our Sunday
services. Each spring the choir also stages a popular fundraiser
concert of popular show tunes.
Volunteers from Immanuel First Church join
other area Lutheran churches every Tuesday morning at Holy Cross
Lutheran Church in La Puente, California to assemble, pack and
distribute large-print books of the Bible, tracts and holiday materials
for visually impaired Christians around the world.
