The Kingdom Assignment at IFL
by Pastor Mason Okubo
July 2010
An anonymous donor has challenged our church to
participate in the Kingdom Assignment. Thirty $100 bills will be
distributed among our congregation to use as God leads them, for the
furthering of His kingdom.
This project came from a book, The Kingdom Assignment - What
Will You Do with the Talents God Has Given You? by
Denny and Leesa Bellesi. The idea sprang from the Parable of the
Talents in Matthew 25:14. God gives "talents" (money, talents,
resources) to people to invest for the furthering of His Kingdom.
The rules of the challenge are as follows. People are to:
- rRecognize the money belongs to God.
- Invest
the money in a way that would extend God's kingdom. (Examples: buy a
homeless man a dinner, or a Bible; start a mission which can live on
for years; pay for someone's car; purchase milk for an orphanage.)
Whatever you do is between you and God.
- Return in 90 days and share the results of their
investments.
In
the book, the Bellesis share stories of what God accomplished through
the people who took the challenge. There is the story of Steve, who was
a reluctant participant. After praying about how to use the $100, he
and his wife planned a neighborhood Wishing Tree. Its purpose was to
fulfill the Christmas wishes of needy families. In a short time they
collected over 80 wishes. Later, they talked about their project with
the local neighbors. Within a couple of weeks the $100 grew to over
$8000 as over a hundred of their neighbors asked to be part of the
program. Another woman took her $100 to local bookstores, asking them
to match the amount in books which she later distributed to needy
children. The Kingdom Assignment is filled with success stories of
people who had stepped out in faith waiting to see what would happen.
It
is important to note: the rules do not demand that there be obvious
success. After three months, if nothing happens then... that is the
report. Do not be afraid of failure. At the very worst, we will have
done this service in the name of God. It is our chance to share God's
love, comfort and hope. It is our chance to let people know about the
love of Christ. These are things which will bear fruit of eternal
value. Having said that, we are eager to see what God will work through
us. I look forward to hearing great things.
Please keep the project and the volunteers in your
prayers. May God richly bless our Kingdom Assignment.
